Music Festival Sunshade

For this project I designed and made a large-scale textile sunshade for Festival Atmosféra, a Slovak music and arts festival known for its intimate character, carefully curated program, and strong emphasis on community and sustainability, and atmosphere.
The sunshade was conceived as both a functional and visual centerpiece that would enhance this identity. The structure measures approximately 20 meters in diameter and was constructed from 48 individual fabric segments.
Its radial composition was inspired by the geometry of a mandala, creating a calm, symmetrical pattern that radiates outward from the center. The soft, warm color palette reflects the festival’s visual language and contributes to a welcoming and harmonious environment beneath the canopy.
Material selection played a key role in the project. The sunshade was made from a combination of new fabrics and carefully sourced deadstock textiles from Textile Mountain, integrating sustainability into both concept and execution. Working with a mix of materials required thoughtful planning in terms of color balance, weight distribution, and structural stability. Designing at this scale presented both technical and logistical challenges - from pattern development and sewing to installation - demanding precision and coordination throughout the process.
The final installation provided shade, spatial definition, and a strong visual identity for the festival grounds. More than a protective structure, the sunshade became a gathering point and atmospheric element, reinforcing the spirit of festival Atmosféra through material, color, and form.
